There’s a lot going on this weekend, and most of it seems to be crammed into one amazing day! From sun up to sun down, the city will keep you active this Saturday – I hope you’re ready.
February 2nd – Groundhog Day
Sure, it’s not a major holiday, but it gives Portland an excuse to do some fun things. Clinton Street Theater, one of the oldest operating movie houses in the United States, is hosting their Fifth Annual Groundhog Day Community Event. The festivities include a screening the much loved film, Groundhog Day, a trivia contest, raffle and more. Prizes will include gift certificates for some great local businesses. The event is free, and food and drink will be provided. The event will begin around 2:45pm and the movie starts at 5pm.
February 2nd – Chinese New Year Cultural Fair
Before you head to the theater, join the Portland Chinese Times and Portland Art & Cultural Center as they celebrate 2019 with their Chinese New Year Cultural Fair. The celebration features folk dance, instrumental music, martial arts, kid activities, and lots of delicious Chinese food. The Oregon Convention Center is hosting the event and admission is only $9, and children under three get in for free.
February 2nd -World Wetlands Day
Celebrate World Wetlands Day at the Oregon Zoo. Countless plants and creatures—including humans—are dependent on wetlands for survival, and our everyday actions can impact their health. There will be educational activities in the Nature Exploration Station, and even a crocodile feeding! Wildlife experts will be educating the community about ocean debris, National Wildlife Refuges, beavers and their important role in the ecosystem, the recovery of bald eagles, aquatic invasive species and salmon. Keepers will help to inform the community about what small actions humans can take to create a better future for our wetlands and their inhabitants. Learn from biologists about wetlands projects and learn about the zoo’s conservation work with pond turtles.
February 1 -3rd – Dance Show
Building on its fruitful history of working in film, BodyVox will embark on expanding its unique brand of dance theater. The Cutting Room showcases a mash up of cinematic scenes from classic films and cutting-edge independent productions. Action films will blend with comedy, drama and sci-fi to create an architecture for movement motifs that reinterpret the scenes, adding layers of dramatic context. This re-imagined production will journey to an intersection of nostalgia, performance, animation and innovation, where we will find movies and memories at the heart of our shared experience.
