Hello, weekend! While there’s a rise in shopping now that the holiday season is here (hello, pop up shops!), there’s plenty of other ways to enjoy your time just in case you want to hold off. Shop until you drop if you please, but if you enjoy the arts, holiday train rides, coffee tours, and family friendly movies, your fun weekend is waiting for you!
PDX Pop Up Shops – November 16th – December 24th
PDX Pop-Up Shops are back! The shops returned on Thursday, November 16th, but there will be plenty of time to shop and support small, local businesses if you decide to check one out. Both locations are indoors – located inside inside Pioneer Place mall and the Standard Insurance Center. Your support can seriously make a world of difference to up-and-coming local makers. Past years of PDX Pop-Up Shops have provided a launch pad for several Portland shopping mainstays, so if you happen to meet an owner, you just might be meeting a millionaire in the making.
Sophie Larrimore: Sunday Painting – November 17th – 21st
Sophia Larrimore’s exhibit has been available for viewing since late October. Just in case you didn’t know about it, you can check out her display, Sunday Painting, during its final weekend here. Larrimore is known for her dog paintings, but this time, “the dog provides a blank slate for her to imprint and imbue with rich work that is at once highly individualized but also widely recognizable”. In other words, expect something abstract! Combined with color and texture, her mixture of vibrant organic shapes and fun geometric patterns might make you stop and stare for a while.
The Train to Christmas Town – Mount Hood Railroad – November 18th – December 28th
Enjoy the magic of Christmas with the whole family aboard The Mount Hood Railroad’s The Train to Christmas Town! Based on the children’s book of the same name, the Train to Christmas Town will take you on a ride through Hood River Valley. The experience features delicious treats, a special book reading, and singing and entertainment with Santa’s elves and characters from the book. Last but not least, there will a special stop to pick up Santa, who delivers gifts and cheer to each train car. It’s an all new show this year, so be sure to book your tickets soon for a truly special weekend experience.
A Streetcar Named Delicious Coffee Tour – November 19th – December 31st
Are you a coffee fan? There’s several cafes and micro-roasters who would love for you to come visit in each of Portland’s diverse neighborhoods. Ditch your car and jump on a streetcar for a guided riding and walking-tour. You’ll be able to sample Portland’s coffee and visit five different establishments to experience brew-method demonstrations. It’s a three-hour coffee tour experience, so make sure you eat a good breakfast so you can keep up with the crowd.
Coraline – November 19th
Movie buffs, unite! If you need a family friendly activity, the Northwest Film Center is proud to present Coraline at 2pm on Sunday. Based on Neil Gaiman’s international best-selling novel, Coraline’s heroine is an adventurous girl (Dakota Fanning) who discovers a doorway to a parallel world in her home. Everything is going great until her Other Mother tries to keep her there. Watch Coraline as she navigates through this world, and develops enough courage to get back to the world she left behind. Just so you know, LAIKA’s first feature film earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Animated Film.
