Hello, weekend! There are so many FUN things happening as we move into December, and we couldn’t find a way to leave so many out. Enjoy this extended version of weekend fun to learn more about what’s happening all around the Portland area for the holiday season!
Christmas Ship Parade – December 1st – 21st.
Christmas ship owners are getting ready to set sail along the Columbia and Willamette rivers for their 63rd year! If you’re up for watching holiday themed boats sail around during this year’s Christmas Ship Parade, bundle up starting TODAY and head out! The boats come in all sizes, ranging from 14 – 65 feet, and each ship will entertain you with their performances. The local pride will be overflowing too–these privately owned vessels come from Portland, Vancouver, McMinnville, Salem and Hood River areas. Just to let you know–Christmas Ships, Inc. is an all-volunteer organization! There are no paid staff or officers, just a large group of friendly individual volunteers/skippers who give back to the community they love.
Gingerbread Adventures – December 1st – 31st
Starting Friday, December 1st, you can head out to OMSI to check out Gingerbread Adventures, an exhibit that takes a sweet and smart look at the science behind a favorite holiday activity—gingerbread houses! This event is free with museum admission, and you’ll be able to learn about the gingerbread house origins, see giant sculptures and enjoy family-friendly activities. If you decide to go sometime this weekend, be on your best behavior! You can’t eat the displays, but there’s tons of sweet treats available for purchase.
$5 After 5 – December 1st – 29th
There are so many events kicking off today, and this one is no different. The Portland Art Museum invites you to play with them every Friday this month. For just $5, you’ll be able to have a different Museum experience. This museum’s $5 After 5 event is little bit more relaxed, more interactive and more social experience. So if you’re a chatter, bring the questions and quaint conversation along with you. There will be unique tours (spoiler alert, some are Game of Thrones themed), photo booths, art guides and other special events. If this sounds like a frugal and fun adventure, grab a buddy and head to the Portland Art Museum after 5pm on Fridays all month long.
Christmas in a Galaxy Far, Far Away – December 2nd & 3rd
This is definitely a special and “out of the box” fundraiser that celebrates that holiday in true intergalactic style–Star Wars style to be exact. Torchsong Entertainment will be partnering with The Peninsula Odd Fellows Lodge and a local charity for this exciting all-ages party. Christmas in a Galaxy Far, Far Away is meant to please people of all ages. You’ll be able to do things like get your picture taken with Vader Claus, create ornaments and other Jedi-approved holiday crafts, listen to unique holiday stories like “The Nigh Before Sithmas” and more. Head over to the Peninsula Odd Fellows Lodge to support a good cause. Plus, you can shamelessly celebrate with other Star Wars fans for this two-day weekend event.
Good Market – December 2nd
Would you like to support future creative powerhouses this weekend? Good Market is an amazing holiday market featuring one-of-a-kind goods made by students of Portland State University Art & Design programs. There will be plenty to see and plenty to purchase. You’ll be able to find art prints, holiday cards, buttos and more. Shop local and make a sale that’s directly with these budding artists. All proceeds will go directly back to the artists too!
Jingle Bell Run – December 3rd
If you want to give yourself a healthy boost and support a good cause, you can participate in the The Arthritis Foundation’s original Jingle Bell Run! It’s a fun way to get decked out and be festive. You’ll also be racing to raise funds and awareness to cure America’s #1 cause of disability. Put on your favorite holiday costume to participate, live it up, and be jolly for a good reason. Bring everyone you know to be a Champion of Yes! You should also know that 100% of your registration fee and fundraising efforts go to this great cause.
