This weekend lineup starts and ends with elephants… You can start your weekend at the elephant garlic festival and end it with a day at the zoo! There are plenty of other fun and interesting events, and they are all outdoors. So, if you’re excited to enjoy another Portland adventure under the sun, keep reading.
Elephant Garlic Festival – August 10th – 12th
Elephant garlic is a bigger version than traditional garlic, and while it has a milder flavor, it has a huge size. This weekend, North Plains, OR is hosting a 3-day elephant garlic festival to celebrate it! Visit the festival to see what some of your favorite vendors are doing to create delicious garlic infused treats. There will also be a parade, 10k run, kids play area, craft station, live music, and more.
Hiking Photography Workshop – August 11th
Mt. Hood Meadows will be your backdrop as you capture the beauty of the environment in this weekend’s hiking photography workshop. Led by Grant Myrdal, novice photographers will learn how to accentuate subject matter with creative photography techniques. The course will also teach you how to use lighting to change photo details and how to create sun flares as part of the composition. All digital cameras, including cell phones, are welcome, just make sure you pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and wear comfortable hiking shoes.
Alberta Street Fair – August 11th
After two decades of hosting a wide-ranging blend of events and activities, the Alberta Street Fair is back once again for their 21st community showcase. If you like street fairs, you’ll love the smells and the sounds that vendors are presenting starting at 11am. If you’re one of the 25,000 visitors to stop by, you may wish to consider using public transportation.
Providence Bridge Pedal – August 12th
The 23rd Annual Bridge Pedal celebrates Portland’s “pedal power” as participants bike across the bridge on Sunday. This community event encourages you to bring your neighbors and friends to bike, skate, scoot, and walk across a car-free street and bridge. The fun route includes the upper decks of both the Marquam and Fremont bridges.
World Elephant Day – August 12th
Just in case elephant garlic isn’t your thing, you can see an actual elephant at the Oregon Zoo instead. It’s World Elephant Day this Sunday, and the global holiday is designed to increase our awareness and efforts to protect elephants – an endangered animal. There will be faux elephant ears to wear and tasty “elephant ears” to eat. All World Elephant Day activities are free with your zoo admission. Plus, discounts are offered to visitors who ride the MAX light rail or Trimet bus!
