“You know it when you get it” – A customer focus parable

A friend of mine, named Ross, recently told me about the time he needed to do some repairs to the foundation of his house. He knew that the stability of his entire home relied on its foundation, so one small crack wasn’t something to take lightly. But Ross is no contractor or structural engineer, and he had no idea what to do. He just knew that he couldn’t ignore the problem.

So, he called foundation repair specialists and talked to them, in detail, about his concerns. He searched online. Read about DIY projects. He talked to family and friends. And as he was explaining this entire process to me, I couldn’t help but make comparisons to trying to find a good DUI attorney.

Fortunately, it didn’t take Ross long to decide which company he wanted to work with. One kept him waiting and never called when they said they would, and one sounded annoyed that he was even calling. So, Ross still doesn’t know the first thing about foundation work, and that’s okay. Because he knew enough to pick the right company to do the best job for him. And, no, I’m not really talking about home repairs anymore, but I’m sure you quickly figured that out.
