September is a fabulous time of year. The summer sun is still shining, and there’s a crispness in the air that alludes to autumn. This weekend, take your pick of summertime celebrations and/or events that coax you into the coziness of fall. Who says you can’t have both?
Summer 7th – 8th – Dragon Boat Festival
This summer’s Rose Festival has already come to a close, but one of its most popular attractions is back this weekend! If you missed the Dragon Boat Races earlier this year (or even if you didn’t) you’ll want to check out this event. Head down to Tom McCall Waterfront Park for this year’s Dragon Boat Festival. Watch as these artistically crafted human-powered vessels race down the Willamette for the winning title! If all the excitement works up an appetite, you’re in luck! There will be food vendors and a comfortable place to gather before, during, and after the race. If the crowds aren’t your thing, you can always stroll the waterfront loop and catch the colorful excitement from a distance. The choice is yours!
September 8th – T2 vs Orange County SC
Marking their fifth year in the United Soccer League, the Portland Timbers 2 (T2) are led by coach Cameron Knowles, whose tactics resulted in the franchise’s first playoff appearance last season. Now you can catch players on the Timbers’ top development team hone their skills at Providence Park. Take the family for a fun outing, grab some snacks and watch an exciting soccer match while cheering with the crowd!
September 8th – Corn Maze
So… we know it’s still summer, but signs of fall are popping up all around! Your local coffee shops are serving spiced seasonal treats, spiders are building webs everywhere (we’re less excited about that one), and the creatively crafted Sauvie Island Corn Maze is open for business! The theme of this year’s maze is Equality, and it depicts the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter. This maze is a special dedication to the US National Women’s Soccer Team’s FIFA World Cup win and in support of equal pay in the workplace. So, if you’re feeling more like hayrides and hot lattes than tank tops and flip flops, this event is right for you!
September 7th – Portland Mini Maker Faire
We love all the wonderfully stimulating exhibits OMSI has to offer. This weekend they have something special for us! The Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.
