It’s the final weekend of summer. How are you feeling about that? Are you ready to trade in your flip flops for wellies, or are you craving more time in the sunshine? The forecast shows a little bit of both this weekend, and we’ve found a variety of events that could satisfy summer-savorers and autumn-adorers alike!
September 22nd – Harvest Festival and Farmers Market
Sauvie Island is a summertime favorite. The drive is beautiful, and the tree-lined beaches are perfect for sunbathing. Come September, Sauvie Island becomes an autumn wonderland full of pumpkins and corn mazes. This weekend, Sauvie Island is hosting their first ever Harvest Festival and Farmers Market! Some folks are feeling blue about the change in season, while others are as ready as ever for gray skies and cozy sweaters. The folks at Sauvie Island’s Krueger Farms completely understand—that’s why they’ve created an event that will be fun for everybody! Support this local gem and celebrate the change of seasons with roasted corn, u-pick flowers, and vintage style portraits to remember the day by.
September 21st – Free Museum Admission Day
There are over 35,000 museums in the United States, with over 200 in the state of Oregon. What is your favorite museum in the Portland area? Is it the interactive OMSI? What about the ornate architecture of the Pittock Mansion? Or maybe you like the quirkiness of Stark’s Vacuum museum. This Saturday is an amazing opportunity for FREE admission to select museums across the nation! Smithsonian Magazine has had a huge hand in making this happen, so head over to your website and find participating museums near you! Visit a favorite or check out exhibits you’ve never seen before. Free-admission tickets are good for TWO people, so you can share the experience with your best pal.
September 21st – Apple Fest
TLC is an acronym for “tender loving care”. It is also the nickname of the Tryon Life Community Farm, which is appropriate since the TLC farm puts a heaping dose of care into everything they do. Just a couple of days before the fall equinox, the TLC farm will host their 6th annual Apple Fest! Start off the autumn season with a heaping dose of care and community while enjoying all things apple! Sample local varieties of freshly picked apples or check out the apple pie contest to find out whose grandma really has the best recipe. The TLC farm is nestled into Tryon Creek’s forest, and you’ll have a chance to donate on the way in. There will even be special songs sung to the trees… yes, people sing to trees there. They’re really nice to the trees, that’s why the apples are so good. If you don’t believe it, you’ll have to go see (and taste) for yourself!
September 21st – The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
If the weather is simply too dreary for you to go out and play, crawl into the cozy Hollywood Theater for a film that’s even spookier than the rain clouds! Released in Germany in 1920, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari will reveal the creative beginnings of the horror genre. Watch the terrifying tale of an evil hypnotist unfold through obscure angles and shadow play, while local organist Dean Lemire plays the soundtrack live from the theater, just like they did in the 1920’s. Don’t worry if you’re easily spooked – this is a 2pm matinee and there will be plenty of daylight left when the movie ends!
