Not a lot of outdoor events going on this weekend? Not feeling the virtual thing…again? Running out of things to reorganize and repair at home? We’re right there with you! To offer some fresh ideas, we’ve got suggestions for cool craft and cookie pairings, with a theme for each day of the weekend to make it more interesting. Fortunately, every day is a national “holiday” honoring everything from inanimate objects, to food and causes. And frankly, that’s fine with us. After all, who doesn’t love an excuse to celebrate? So this weekend you can observe three quirky holidays with yummy treats a little creativity. Whether you choose to fly solo or have your loved ones join in, you’re sure to have some fun.
February 26th – National Pistachio Day
These little treats may be small but they’re nutritional powerhouses—they’re one of the top three healthiest nuts you can eat! And, they have a great smile. In China, pistachios are known as the “happy nut” because their cracked-open shell makes them look like they’re smiling. They’re known to be a symbol of health, happiness, and good fortune and are often given as a gift during the Chinese New Year. To celebrate, enjoy this simple 6-ingredient recipe for pistachio drop cookies, that look simply divine. When you’re done, use the shells to make one of MANY super cool projects (who knew there were so many things you could do with leftover pistachio shells?!) Some of our favorites were a miniature tulip bouquet, tealight candle holders, and gorgeous gift bows!
February 27th – National Strawberry Day
The strawberry is the first fruit to ripen in the spring. So when the first strawberries appear, it’s a sure sign that warmer weather is on the way and you can taste a new season in the air. To show your love for the fruit, you can make these delightful little strawberry cookies in no time at all. And while you’re treating yourself to such a delicious snack, have some fun making these painted strawberry rocks for your garden! The neat thing is that they serve as more than just garden decor. Apparently the rocks fool birds and other pests from stealing the real strawberries from your garden. The birds and critters will be attracted to the painted berries, and once they get fed up with the rocks, they’ll leave your strawberries alone. How cool!
February 28th – National Public Sleeping Day
Okay, so maybe the “public” part isn’t that appealing. But it’s safe to say that we can all agree that sleep in any form is pretty incredible. So why not celebrate such a glorious thing? As you may know, lavender has been used for centuries to calm the mind and body and improve sleep quality. For this “holiday,” and as a nice cap to your weekend, treat yourself to some scrumptious salted white chocolate lavender cookies (it’s okay, we drooled a little too). Then, put on some relaxing music while you make your very own tabletop zen garden! You can make it as simple or elaborate as you want to, with nothing more than a shadow box and supplies from the craft store. Be sure to share pictures of your creation with us online on our Facebook or Instagram page (#SundayFunday and #RDFCulture)
