This is a special Memorial Day edition of Hello Weekend, with a focus on Benton County, Oregon. Although the events listed here are Corvallis-centric, keep in mind that Benton County is a large, beautiful section of the Willamette Valley, with natural attractions and activities ranging from birdwatching at the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge, to mountain biking on McCulloch Peak, to camping at Alsea Falls – there’s no lack of outdoors adventure to be had. In case of rain (something we’re always ready for around here), or you’re just in the mood for something less dusty, here are some relatively urban options to get you out of the house in the central valley:

Robotics Day exhibit, May 25th

The Corvallis-Benton County Public Library is hosting a demonstration of robotics and other STEM-related fun on Saturday from 2:00 PM-5:00 PM. Local teams will be presenting their projects, and YES, there will even be opportunities for novice robot driving. This is a great, engaging way to introduce your kids to FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Tecnology) and LEGO League programs available to them through local schools. Click here for more information about Robotics Day and enjoy the family fun!

Confluence II OSU Art & Science Fellows Exhibit

Keeping our STEM-based theme going, make sure to check out the Confluence II exhibit at The Arts Center for a showcase of interdisciplinary work from 2023-2024 PRAx Student Fellows – PRax supports creative work informed by research and engineering studies at Oregon State University. This is the first of four exhibitions featuring final projects from the program combining the arts and sciences in novel ways. Head down to the Corrine Woodman Gallery of The Arts Center, open Tuesday-Saturdays from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Also, make sure to visit the Artists of EASA exhibit while you’re there, featuring artists from EASA (Early Assessment & Support Alliance), a program of Benton County Mental Health Department. There’s cool stuff happening in the Benton County arts scene!

KBVR-TV Spring Concert, May 25th

If you’re ready to rock out with some home-grown music, head over to OSU’s Student Experience Center for a free concert featuring Corvallis locals Polypore, Eugene’s Grrl Band, and Portland favorite Black Shelton. It’s a sensibly early night of punk rock weirdness, running from 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM in the SEC plaza. No one will judge you if you bring some earplugs.

Memorial Day Observance, May 27th

Consider wrapping up your long weekend with a respectful Memorial Day observance of the sacrifice of over 6,000 Oregonians at the Benton County Veterans Memorial at the National Guard Armory in Corvallis. The ceremony will be held on the south lawn at 2:00 PM. Make sure to take a moment to take in the memorial wall honoring fallen service members from Benton County.

Whatever your plans are, we here at Reynolds Defense Firm wish you a safe and happy holiday weekend!
