With the first winter storm about to slam into Oregon this weekend, it might be best to stay inside. With that being said, below are some ways to stay warm and cozy inside while still having fun and being entertained with some alcohol-alternative home activities! However, if you have to venture outside, below are also some tips for how to drive safe during winter freezes. But first, did you know that Norwegian has a word that describes the state of being cozy and contented? It’s Hygge (pronounced “hew-guh”).

Books to read while practicing “hygge”: January 12th-14th

Since most stores and activities will be closed this weekend due to the impending winter weather, curl up with a cozy book, blanket, and beverage! Here are some of our book recommendations for the perfect cozy winter read:

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree: a very cozy fantasy read about an Orc who retires from the swordswoman life to opens a coffee shop.

Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher: follow the lives of 5 very different people who are brought together in a Scottish estate house.

The snow child by Eowyn Ivey: It’s a magical story about how a couple’s life is changed forever by the arrival of a mysterious little girl.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie: now a highly ranked movie, enjoy the inspiration for the screen adaption! Murder, mystery, and intrigue on a train racing through Europe.

TV and Movie Recommendations: January 12th – 14th

Not a reader? No worries–we got you. Here are our recommendations for some cozy TV and Movies to watch while the world freezes outside.

Little Women (2019): an absolute classic that has been reimagined for a more modern audience. Can be streamed on Hulu.

Wonka (2023): currently in theaters, you might be able to catch it at your local movie theater if they don’t close. It’s just as whimsical as the original, and perfectly packed with modern actors. The Cinemark in the Clackamas Town Center currently has show times for 10:55AM – 10:35PM.

The Chronicles of Narina (2005): an oldie but a goody, especially during the winter. You can stream it on Disney+

Harry Potter (any): Who doesn’t want a little magic in their lives? Do a Harry Potter marathon this weekend! You can stream it on Max.

Mt. Hood Ski Bowl: January 12th – 14th

Snow has finally hit the Mt Hood area of the Cascades and that means it’s Ski Bowl time! Escape the winter storm in the city and hit the slopes instead. Ski bowl offers tubing, sledding, skiing, and snowboarding. A perfect family get away for the weekend. Tickets for the ski lift range from $58-$89, and they offer the chance for night skiing passes as well. Don’t have equipment? No problem! You can rent directly from the lodge. Ski bowl is located at 31315 E Multorpor Rd, Government Camp, 97028. If you’re worried about driving, catch the Mt. Hood Express from Sandy Oregon. For more details, visit their website.

Tips on safe driving in Oregon: January 12th – 14th

While it’s recommended that you stay inside while the world freezes over, here are some ODOT recommended tips on how to drive safely in the snow and ice. The weather can change in a minute, so be prepared to make adjustments to your travel plans.

A four-wheel/AWD is best. If you don’t have access to an AWD, then maybe find an alternative to your travel plans (car-pool with someone who does or take the city bus).

Bridges and overpasses are the most dangerous when it’s icy out, but if you can’t avoid it remember these tips from ODOT:

Turn off your cruise control.

Keep a larger than normal distance between you and the other drivers.

If you feel like your sliding, gradually slow down (don’t slam on the brakes).

Oregon is filled with hills and elevation changes so watch for sudden icy patches, especially in shaded areas.

Keep your distance between snowplows and trucks.

If you have ice on your car or house, it might be on the road as well–so be cautious!
