With the New Year looming, spend the last few days of 2023 doing something new! The Oregon coast is welcoming people to several spots for their biannual whale watching, Silverton is hanging on to the Christmas spirit with one last weekend of their Christmas Market, and the Portland Revels are putting on a magical production at the Judy Kafoury Center for Youth Arts. Whatever you do this weekend, make it count by having fun and being around the people you like best. Read below for some of our recommendations for what to do around the Portland area and beyond this weekend.

Whale Watching Week: December 27th-31st

Every year, Oregon State Parks along the coast celebrate the biannual whale migration season by hosting a Whale Watch Week in late December and late March. They do this by placing 15 volunteers in sites along the coast to help visitors spot the Gray Whales as they make their way down to Baja Mexico. This weekend will be the winter watch party! Some locations to consider hitting up include: Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint, The Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay, Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, and more! Check their website for all possible locations and tally how many whales you spot this weekend.

Silverton Christmas Market: December 29th – 31st

Not done with the holidays yet? Maybe you have some late Christmas gifts you still need to purchase? If you’re in the Silverton, Oregon area, their Christmas market is still running through this weekend. It’s set up like an “authentic” German Market where you can purchase goods from artisan vendors and imported goods from Germany. The market is open from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and is located at 879 W Main St, Silverton, Oregon 97381.

Portland Revels Presents: Emerald Dragon, a Children’s Celebration of Light: December 29th – 30th

Playing this weekend only, this children’s play is a perfect New Year’s Eve production for all of you who have littles out of school right now. It’s presented by the Revels Children’s Chorus (a local Children’s Chorus) and will be showing at the Judy Kafoury Center for Youth Arts, 1000 SW Broadway T-100, Portland, Oregon 97205. The show is about 1 hour long (perfect for younger audiences) and ticket prices vary from $18-$35. Check out their website for more information and show times.
