This weekend is all about Valentines Day! Whether you’re celebrating with your special someone, your family, “Galentines” or “Guyentines,” we’re here to help you plan the ultimate weekend, filled with lights, dancing, shopping, and DIY fun!
Going out?
Winter Light Festival – Last day is February 12th
Every year, the Portland Winter Light Festival transforms the City of Roses into a city of lights. Designed to bring light to the wintry darkness, this free festival returns every winter with imaginative works that combine light and technology to create interactive experiences. This year the festival will be featured in a pop-up-like format where light art installations will appear all throughout the city instead of a centralized location. For maps of installation locations, visit the Portland Winter Light Festival’s website.
Try the Tango! February 11th through 14th
The City of Roses boasts one of the best tango communities outside of Buenos Aires, with dances and lessons available almost every night. Intimate, sultry and passionate, tango was born just outside of Buenos Aires in the barrio of La Boca, Argentina. It’s a dance of desire and improvisation, conjuring images of steamy nights in small cafés, high heels beneath sequined gowns, and dapper men with impeccable posture. If you’ve always wanted to try it out, this weekend is the perfect excuse! Check out Portland’s Valen Tango.
Portland Night Market – February 11th and 12th
The Portland Night Market showcases many unique businesses that call Portland home. Blending food, culture, music, drinks and retail together for an adventurous evening in the Central Eastside. Come meet some of Portland’s best makers and creators. The Portland Night Market is a FREE quarterly event and open to all ages.
Staying In?
For Couples
Recreate your first date
If you went to a coffee shop, whip up some artisanal coffees and sit and talk for hours. If you went to a romantic restaurant, print the menu and try to make one of the dishes in your kitchen. If you went to the movies, re-watch the movie and be sure to include all your favorite movie theater snacks, like popcorn, Hot Tamales, and Milk Duds! Get creative and remember to share memories of that first date.
Conversation Starters
Sure, you and your partner have incredible conversations all the time — but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from a little inspiration on special occasions. Print these cards and take turns drawing one from the deck. Some great examples include “what song reminds you of a romantic time that we spent together?” to “if we were a superhero tag-team what would our powers be?”
For the Family
Decorate
Kids love to decorate – who doesn’t?! There are so many cool DIY Valentines’ Day decorations that you can whip up in no time. Wear matching outfits, turn on some music, enjoy your favorite chocolates and get to work!
Get crafty
Card-making is a great way to get crafty and creative. Pull out your art supplies and put together the most festive combinations of pink and red — or anything else! This is a fun activity for kids and adults, and no matter what your relationship status, there’s always someone in your life who would appreciate a DIY Valentine’s Day card.
For Friends
Have a date night
You can play games, talk, share cocktail or mocktail recipes. You can even watch a movie together like you’re at your favorite theater, dress up, and make it feel like a real night out.
Cook together
If you’re trying to avoid the expense or crowds at the hottest restaurant in town this year, that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a delicious dinner. Put on some tunes, prepare the same meal and eat it together. You can compare notes on recipes.
